Residential Observatory

Retractable Roof

A private lake lodge in northern Minnesota was designed with a third-floor observatory, with a balcony that overlook the lake. An optical telescope is housed inside the observatory, which is covered by a 20 by 22-foot retractable roof. The homeowner opens roof using push button controls, and enjoys a 180 degree, unobstructed view of the starlit sky.

The staff of Uni-Systems Engineering designed, supplied, and installed the structure and electro-mechanical drive system for the residential observatory retractable roof. When opening, the front of the roof pivots up 12 degrees, the entire roof slides back 18 feet, and the front of the roof pivots back down. In less than four minutes, the roof is fully cantilevered out of sight behind the observatory.
