Reliant Stadium

Retractable Roof

Built in 2002, Reliant Stadium is the first retractable roof stadium in the NFL. Home to the Houston Texans football team, and the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. The 180,000-sqare-foot retractable roof consists of two large panels that bi-part at the 50-yard line and rest over each end zone when in the open position. Operation is controlled from a personal computer located in the stadium press box, which provides live images of the travel path for each roof panel, and live feedback from all roof components throughout operation.

The staff of Uni-Systems Engineering designed, supplied, and commissioned the electro-mechanical drive system for the Reliant Stadium retractable roof. The traction drive system, operating over a pair of flat rails, opens or closes the roof in less than 12 minutes, and is designed to withstand hurricane conditions that occur in Houston Texas.
